Anywhere But Here

Damian

When Angel explains to me that her new job—at my company—is bringing her to tears, I’m devastated. I want to step in and tell her she doesn’t have to do something she isn’t comfortable with, but the logical part of my brain tells me she wouldn’t appreciate that kind of overreach or special treatment. The last thing I want is for her to think I pulled any strings to get her the job, because, even though I thought about it, I didn’t, and she landed that job on her own merit. That’s not an accomplishment I’ll cheapen for her. She deserves to feel proud of herself for that, even if she’s regretting it.

So, I’m at a crossroads. Which Damian does she need right now? Manager Damian who can make her work worries fade, or guy-she-kisses-sometimes Damian who can try to comfort her and help her through her first professional hurdle?

“Let’s eat, then if you want, you can show me what you’ve got so far, and maybe I can help inspire the right idea. I’ve heard Greek food and a good make-out session can really get inspiration flowing.” I grin at her and she laughs in response, some of the obvious tension leaving her shoulders.

She pulls two plates from the cupboard, along with two wine glasses, then pulls out a bottle of white. “Would the gentleman care for another bottle of grocery store wine?” She holds the bottle over her forearm like a sommelier, obviously trying to suppress her laughter.

“Don’t mind if I do; thank you.”

That’s the end of her act because she passes me the bottle and the corkscrew as she sets the glasses in front of me. She takes the seat at the counter beside me and we dig into our food and wine in virtual silence, minus Genie’s snorting.

“I’m such a jerk,” she blurts around a mouthful of Greek salad.

“Why are you a jerk?” I study her face, looking for an answer.

“Because you’ve been here all this time and I haven’t even asked how your work is going. I’ve just complained about mine.”

I huff a laugh, a little surprised she drew that conclusion of herself. Then I recall having to refrain from firing Mitchell just because he wants to ask Angel out. “Work is work, I guess. Nothing of note.”

“Really? No office gossip or Damian-hating pitchfork mobs?”

I wish that was what I wanted to tell her. I’d happily take on a gang of angry advertising executives over keeping something from Angel; especially knowing she’s been nothing but honest with me. But panic takes over, and before I can stop it, my words are spilling out. “So what prompted your promise to never lie?”

She takes another bite of her dinner, chews slowly, then swallows it down with some wine before answering. “I’m surprised it’s taken you so long to ask. Most people jump at the chance when they know I’ll give an honest answer. But it’s not easy to talk about.” Her glassy eyes stare down at her plate.
